North Wind

It's winter now in the village and you wander down the Ardachy road;
Pause for a while at the corner to take a breath that you can't quite draw -
It's getting harder to make the hill each day,
But there's no need to hurry now: the house is lying empty anyway.

The world's not clear anymore: the colours are grey and the edges have blurred.
And all the friends, they can't replace Mary - a year's now gone but the pain hasn't dulled.
Still, you smile and you laugh and you listen to the stories that they bring you every day,
And at night you just sit and stare and watch the clock tick-ticking away.

North Wind don't you keep me awake tonight;
I can't stand another long hour, just me and the company of my mind.
North Wind don't you beat on the window tonight;
Give me a few hours peace.

It's winter now in the village, it's the first time you've faced it on your own.
The kids next door, they call in to see you - they bring a little happiness wherever they go,
But later on, the silence is just like another death:
Just you and the coughing of the fire, and the rattle of your breath.

And your friend in the corner doesn't bring you much joy anymore these days:
The only shows that you ever enjoy are second time around and they bring with them the memories:
Mary's smile; Mary's laugh; Mary's favorite song;
It's just another way of being reminded that Mary's gone.

North Wind, don't you keep me awake tonight;
I can't stand another long hour, just me and the company of my mind.
North Wind, don't you beat on the window tonight;
Give me a few hours peace.

It's winter now in the village and the snow is falling thick and wet.
The kids next door, they're all excited: they're too young to know how cold it's going to get.
And you're sitting in the front room where the fire has died and you're growing cold,
Right out of purpose now, you bow your head and you pray to the Lord.

Oh Lord, will you take me away tonight;
I can't stand another long day, just me and the company of my mind.
Oh Lord will you knock on the window tonight,
And take me away to peace.
